BRIEF HISTORY
In 1934 ATM decides to rebuild the Agudio funicular system and, as part of the renewal of the line, orders new tramways. Two of these are equipped with bogies while the third one, the D1, has two axles. The external livery takes up the historical colors of the ATM, the red-cream adorned with the yellow-blue fillet of the Turin heraldry, abandoned in 1927 by ministerial imposition and re-proposed here as the Sassi-Superga line is not a normal urban tramway. With the exception of the WWII period, when the car was painted with beige color, the D2-D3s are onws of the few trams that have never changed livery. The D2-D3s are the "king" engines of Sassi-Superga, in total in 80 years of service, they have traveled over one and a half million kilometers, accompanying millions of people to the base of the Basilica of Superga. The four TIBB-GTDM engines allow the tram to push up to two trailers (a choice of open, closed trailers and S21-S22 service cars). The largest possible composition is a tramcar plus two trailers, for a total of 210 seats. The interior of the tram and the doors are completely in polished wood. The seats consist of benches with a folding backrest. Only in the area in the valley-side there is a sliding door that divides the passenger area from the front part of the tram: there is no symmetrical equivalent in the hill-side area. The orientation of the tram is fixed, although it is bidirectional: the side facing the hill can be recognized on the outside by the presence of the air ducts. The windows are large, panoramic and can disappear inside the side of the tram: this feature is shared by the other engines of the Sassi-Superga and the historical tramcar n° 116.
